On more than a dozen nights each summer, the center of Providence becomes a big street party known as WaterFire. Conceived by artist Barnaby Evans more than fifteen years ago, this art work of fires along the river accompanied by specially selected music continues from sunset to midnight.

Just beyond the bridge is a wide spot in the river known as The Basin, where the first fires are lit. There are a hundred braziers in a half-mile section of the river.

One of the floating braziers. A small fleet of black boats with crews dressed in black continually add wood to keep the braziers burning until midnight.

Authentic gondolas with authentically-dressed gondoliers give half-hour rides along the river. Patrons may bring wine or champagne to enjoy on their ride.

Most of the streetlights in the area are turned off to enhance the mood. Sconces light the way under the bridges. Spectators sit along the walkways on both sides of the river to watch the fires and the boats and listen to the music.
Here's a six and a half minute video I made of WaterFire.
