One of my favorite places to visit the ocean is the southeastern corner of Rhode Island.

Sailboats in Wickford Harbor
My first stop is generally Wickford, which has a picturesque harbor.
The commercial boat area of Wickford Harbor
A short walk down Wickford's Main Street takes you to the commercial harbor and the fishing dock. The town, which has a connection to Roger Williams, has some beautiful old homes and churches. There are enough antique and gift shops to take an hour or two to visit.
My favorite restaurant in the area is Aunt Carrie's in Narragansett. Open in the summer only, unfortunately. The best Rhode Island "clear" clam chowder and clam fritters, followed by steamed clams? fried clams? No lobster for me, thanks.
Aunt Carrie's Restaurant, Narragansett

The harbor at Jamestown, looking toward Newport. The Pell Bridge (toll) crosses Narragansett Bay between Jamestown, on Conanicut Island, and Newport.

Aunt Carrie's has a modern restroom inside, but it also has this one out back in a separate building. It's probably the one they built when the restaurant opened in 1920. The artwork is worth a look (I can't vouch for the decor in the women's room, though).
This Herring Gull and Black Backed Gull are in Beavertail State Park is on the tip of Conanicut Island in Jamestown. The rocky shore affords plenty of spots to sit and watch the ocean and the shipping traffic on Narragansett Bay.

A lighthouse built in 1856 is still in operation (beacon automated in 1972). A museum is open daily in the summer and weekends in the fall.
